Last week, I took flight to a city known for its ties to flights into space, thanks to sites like NASA's U.S. Space and Rocket Center and Marshall Space Flight Center, to confer over a different sort of technology - networking. With internet and connectivity being a hot issue in the channel industry, solution providers, telecoms and service providers met in Huntsville, Alabama for ADTRAN's Broadband & Business Solutions Summit.

Just one scout around our MSP Road Trip Series will show you how much of an impact internet connectivity has for today's MSPs. With broadband and fast internet speeds yet to reach various regions across the country - including Raleigh, North Carolina, Annapolis, Maryland and San Antonio, Texas, to name a few - it's a notable time to consider what lies ahead in this space.

Welcoming over 100 partners into its headquarters, ADTRAN looked to discuss these issues which ultimately show that the networking arena is a dynamic one calling for flexibility from solution providers in order to continue satisfying customer needs.

The channel is in the midst of seeing mobility and the Internet of Things (IoT) take over, and, as a result, there are more devices being connected to corporate devices than ever with no signs of this slowing down.

During the Connect 2017 event held in conjunction with the Broadband & Business Solutions Summit, Channelnomics sat down with executives from ADTRAN and security vendor partner Untangle to discuss the implications this has for network security and solution providers' ability to ensure their clients' networks are safe. With diverse device types hitting workplaces and security technology changing rapidly, executives pointed to the importance of central management, cloud networking and more.

Network security in the IoT age

Tom Stanton, CEO of ADTRAN, took the main stage during the event and underscored the changes the networking industry is seeing. The executive pointed to customer demands evolving as they grow accustomed to instant, on demand services. Stanton also discussed what this means for how ADTRAN will look to develop the network in the future.

In addition, executives from ADTRAN discussed the growth of broadband demand among customers and why SDN is really about programmability in the eyes of the networking and communications vendor.

And where there is change, there is opportunity. During Connect 2017, Channelnomics sat down with ADTRAN's channel chief, Meggin Sawyer, and discussed how SMBs' shift toward OpEx models is impacting channel partners' businesses. And while this is indeed a challenge for VARs, MSPs and the like, Sawyer also said this is resulting in opportunities around various services.

But the biggest opportunity, according to the channel exec, is around business intelligence. It seems MSPs who can take things to the next level with emerging technologies stand a good chance at taking advantage of the evolving landscape.
