Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton threw for 254 yards and four touchdowns, rookie Christian McCaffrey scored touchdowns rushing and receiving, and the Carolina Panthers crushed the  Miami Dolphins 45-21 on Monday night for their third straight victory.

Jonathan Stewart ran for a season-high 110 yards and Newton added 95, including a 69-yard jaunt on a read option, as the Panthers racked up 294 yards on the ground.

Carolina set a franchise record with 548 yards from scrimmage.

Devin Funchess caught five passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers (7-3) remained a half-game behind the NFC South division leading Saints.

The Dolphins (4-5) have lost three straight.

The game turned with 41 seconds left in the first half when Luke Kuechly intercepted Jay Cutler with Carolina leading 10-7. Four plays later, Newton connected with Ed Dickson on a 7-yard touchdown pass, the first of five straight Carolina touchdown drives.

Preview

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is known to celebrate touchdowns by pretending to rip open his shirt to reveal that he's Superman. The Panthers will need more heroics from their quarterback when they face the Miami Dolphins on

Monday Night Football (5:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The talk in Carolina (6-3) before the 2017 season was dialing back Newton's running and the punishment he absorbed last season. However, Newton is back to being Newton - he's led the Panthers in rushing the last four games. Newton said his surgically-repaired right shoulder still hurts occasionally, but he stills plays with a physical edge, sore shoulder or not.

The Dolphins (4-4) find themselves at a critical juncture for their season. Losers of two straight, they can't afford another loss, knowing a fifth loss would place their playoff hopes in serious jeopardy. Miami coach Adam Gase sent a message to the players trading running back Jay Ajayi to the Philadelphia Eagles last week following their 40-0 loss to Baltimore. The players performed better, but they still lost to the Oakland Raiders.
