Now living in seclusion, Anthony is still described as one of the most hated women in America.
But the 30-year-old – who is estranged from her parents – has one person on her side: defense attorney Cheney Mason. He was second chair for her murder trial, but stepped in as her close confidante after she parted ways with her lead counsel, Jose Baez.
In a new interview with Florida news station WFTV, Mason contradicts the assertion that his client got away with murder.
“No,” Mason responds. “She got away with justice.”
“The public was calling for a lynching,” he continues, “and, you know, I can’t let that happen.”
In the interview, Mason admits that his wife didn’t initially want him to represent Anthony because of the notoriety surrounding the controversial case.
Despite the help from her legal team, Anthony’s life is far from ideal. She has begun a photography business, but sources told PEOPLE last summer that she didn’t have many clients – or many friends.
There’s “not much is going on in her life,” a source told PEOPLE in July. “She gets up each day, hangs around, checks the internet, takes some pictures, and doesn’t do much. She can’t hold a real job, and she doesn’t really make a lot of friends, for obvious reasons.”
“She sort of lives like an old person, on a fixed income without much going on in her life.”
But in the WFTV interview, Mason insists that the public has the wrong perception of Anthony.
“[Casey] is likeable,” he told anchor Greg Warmoth. “She gets along well with my wife. Everybody that’s met her likes he. She wants to go on with her life, and I’m dedicated to help her do that.”
