Detroit-based watch and luxury goods maker Shinola introduced Tuesday its first line of headphones.

The Canfield Headphone Collection comes in four styles and price tags ranging from $195 for an earbuds-style model to $650 for top-of-the-line, over-ear headphones with stainless steel components, lambskin ear cushions and an inline microphone.

The company said this latest product line has been under development for two years.

A large portion of the headphones' components are made in Asia, the company said, yet all final assembly and testing happens in Detroit at Shinola's headquarters, 485 W. Milwaukee  in Midtown.

"This introduction is special,” Tom Kartsotis, Shinola's founder, said in a news release. “It speaks to our love of music and craft and it speaks to the soul of Detroit. It is rare that one product can capture and transmit this much emotion and be so much fun to share.

"It has taken us a while to make it feel right, to make the steel and leather details and the sound all come together," Kartsotis said.

Headphones represent another expansion of Shinola's product offerings, which include watches, bicycles, leather goods, audio speakers and turntables. The Canfield name on the headphones derives from Canfield Street in Midtown Detroit, where Shinola has it flagship store.

Shinola's headphones are at the pricier end of the headphones market, where on-ear models by brands such as Master & Dynamic can start at $400 and even exceed $1,000.

By comparison, the latest EP model in the popular Beats by Dr. Dre line of headphones starts at $129.

Shinola began in Detroit in 2011 and has been praised for investing in the city and creating hundreds of jobs. Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have proudly shown off their Shinola watches.

The company says it employs about 600 people worldwide, including more than 350 in Detroit.

Shinola's parent company is Dallas-based Bedrock Manufacturing, which also owns Filson, a high-end outdoors clothing and gear brand.
