Friday Favorites

Ed. note: Many sites around SB Nation host FanPost Fridays, and we’re joining the fray here at Fish Stripes, because we want to give you the chance to have your voice be heard in long-form style.

Every friday, we’ll post a FanPost prompt to pen type a response to (well, you could pen it, but there’s no guarantee it’ll reach the interwebs). All you have to do to participate is click on the FanPosts button at the top of the blog (next to the site icon) and then select new FanPost, and voila! It’s fairly straightforward, but please feel free to reach out to me (email or twitter is fine, both listed in >my profile) if you ever have any questions about the FanPost process.

If a FanPost is well-written enough, we may decide to promote it to the front page and spread it around on our social media channels, seriously amplifying your awesome opinion’s reach. So, what are you waiting for? Get to it!

FanPost Friday prompt: Who is your all-time favorite Marlins’ player? (and why)

Last week’s prompt: >Should the Marlins trade Christian Yelich and/or J.T. Realmuto?

Everyone has a favorite player. Growing up in Southern California, I began life as a big-time Angels fan, so my initial favorite was wide-smiling first baseman Wally Joyner.

When I started collecting baseball cards, it was Candy Maldonado (because, what an awesome name). When I started playing little league, it was Gary Carter, because he was a catcher, too (and a good one at that).

As I grew older and repented of my Angels-loving ways by shifting my loyalty to my new home team located in the Pacific Northwest, my favorites all became Mariners: Edgar Martinez, the clutch designated-hitter, Jamie Moyer, the crafty southpaw, and Ichiro!, the Japanese phenom who’s approach up at the plate seemed so different from the power hitters of the day he was surrounded by.

The latest evolution in my fan favorites arrived when I became a Marlins fan. I missed out on the titles and the Miguel Cabr-Era that followed. I missed all of Hanley Ramirez’s turn as the face. But I did get to see Giancarlo Stanton’s rise to prominence, and I did get to witness the bright star that was Jose Fernandez.

It would be a cop-out for me to pick Ichiro! as my favorite Marlin, because he was my favorite Mariner long before I ever witnessed him in a Marlins’ uniform. No, I think I’d have to go with Justin Bour. No one entertains me more, and on top of having a winning personality, he’s a great hitter. I think Bour will be amazing this year from a statistical standpoint, but that is the topic for another article and I’ve already written more then I intended to about my own favorites.

Who is your favorite Marlin, past or present? Tell us why...what makes that player special to you.

Remember, there are no wrong answers in this theoretical exercise. Follow the instructions from above, or click here to begin!
