Everton star Wayne Rooney has claimed the current Manchester City aren't the best team to have graced the Premier League, and has questioned their credentials to remain unbeaten.

Pep Guardiola's side have taken the English top flight by storm this season, and have taken an incredible 51 points out of 53 available.

They swept aside Tottenham on Saturday to go 14 points clear at the top, and fans and pundits alike have been lauding the way they have played so far.

Their displays have prompted some to label the team as the best that the Premier League has ever seen, but not in the eyes of former Manchester United man Rooney, who expressed his loyalty for his ex-club.

He said, as quoted by talkSPORT: "There have been so many great teams throughout the years in the Premier League. This City team needs to win trophies and needs to do it for a longer period to be in that bracket. The best ever? I would go with the Man United team from 2008!

"I don’t think they can go unbeaten. They have done incredibly well with the run they have been on, but the Premier League is so difficult, especially now with this Christmas period coming up.

"I know they have a huge squad, a great squad of players. But there are so many top teams. I think in previous years it has been two teams and you went in knowing you would win most of the other games."

United won the Premier League and the Champions League in 2008 and had a formidable attack consisting of Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and was certainly up there as one of the best teams to have graced the Premier League under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.
