Opposition Leader To Give EU Blueprint For Greek Recovery

Greece’s major opposition leader, New Democracy chief Kyriakos Mitsotakis will present his party’s vision to European Union leaders Nov. 13-14 to bring Greece back to growth from a crushing economic crisis and try to change its image as obstinate.

Greece has been relying since 2010 on three international bailouts of 326 billion euros ($380.18 billion) from the Quartet of the EU-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank-European Stability Mechanism which demanded harsh austerity measures.

The current ruling Radical Left SYRIZA-led coalition agreed to even more brutal conditions in return for the third rescue package in the bunch, 86 billion euros ($100.29 billion) that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he would never seek nor accept but did both.

But his foot-dragging over the conditions cost Greece and his Administration is still butting heads with the lenders over what the final terms should be, which Mitsotakis said he wants to change if he comes to power, with polls giving his party big leads after Tsipras reneged on anti-austerity promises.

Mitsotakis is due on Nov. 14 to go to Strasbourg, France, one of the seats of the European Parliament and meet lawmakers of the Conservative European People’s Party as well as senior EU officials.

Mitsotakis will also have a working dinner with European Parliament President Antonio Tajani, who analysts said could play a key role in the Mediterranean country’s politics should former Premier Silvio Berlusconi win elections in 2018.

Mitsotakis is also scheduled to meet with Manfred Weber, Chairman of the EPP Group in the EU assembly, and other leading EPP officials, Kathimerini reported.

Earlier, he told the political news site Politico that he’s ready to make radical changes if he wins even though the country is locked into memoranda with the lenders and has almost no leeway to do do anything major and while serving as Administrative Reform Minister in a previous New Democracy-led Administration supported austerity measure he now said he opposes, the same pattern Tsipras followed.

“There’s an issue of seriousness competence, professionalism in governance and government,” he said, adding that he wanted “a smaller and more efficient” administration.

“I want to streamline public spending. I want to cut taxes. I want to make Greece an attractive investment destination,” he said. “We paid a very heavy bill for experimenting with Mr. Tsipras,” he said.
