Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers continues to be celebrated after his passing in May. This time, Jason Isbell  and the 400 Unit paid tribute to the late singer by performing “Whipping Post” at an Asheville, N.C. show.

Isbell along with his band and his wife Amanda Shires (fiddle, vocals) are on tour supporting The Nashville Sound, and the Asheville stop kicked off the trek which includes almost 40 shows in America and Europe.

“Whipping Post” came at the end of the concert, and it lasted for over eight minutes and featured several solos.

During his early music career, Isbell was certainly influenced by the group. He spoke highly of the Allman Brothers in an interview with >Relix, saying, “The Allmans were trying to find something— they were on a bit of a musical journey, and that was really something that Southern rock didn’t necessarily embrace. That was more of an improvisational, sort of Grateful Dead influence.”

Isbell is one of many country music artists who expressed sadness over Allman’s death, and several artists covered various Allman Brothers songs live including Zac Brown Band (“Whipping Post”), Eric Church (“Midnight Rider”) and Lady Antebellum (“Midnight Rider”). The CMT Music Awards also featured a star-studded group of Jason Aldean, Lady A’s Charles Kelley and Darius Rucker.

The “24 Frames” singer may be coming to a city near you during his tour. Visit Isbell’s official website for more details on upcoming shows.
